Surfing is Now California’s Official Sport

Governor Jerry Brown signed on Aug. 20, 2018 the Assembly Bill 1782 designating surfing as the official state sport, due to its popularity  in California history. The bill says surfing became an iconic sport after it was introduced to California from Hawaii. The surfing industry, which is mostly based in California, generates more than $6 billion in annual retail sales across the nation. In addition, California coast areas and beaches generate $1.15 trillion in related to economic activities every year. Surfing was also declared as the state sport of Hawaii in 1998.
