In a big win for India, the Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London today ordered the extradition of fugitive liquor tycoon Vijay Mallya to India, after a year-long trial.

Mallya will now have 14 days to file an appeal in a higher court.

Chief Magistrate Judge Emma Arbuthnot gave the verdict in the case. The decision would now go to the UK Home Office for the Home Secretary, Sajid Javid, to pass an order based on that verdict.

The liquor tycoon has been wanted in India for alleged fraud and money laundering charges amounting to Rs 9,000 crores.

Mallya had fled the country to London in 2016, after a consortium of banks got together to begin legal proceedings against him to recover the loans.

Mallya after being extradited from the UK to India will reportedly have to stay in Mumbai’s Arthur Road jail.
