Mississippi, U.S.A:  A jury in U.S. District Court in Jackson, Mississippi after four hours of deliberations exonerated Bayer AG and Johnson & Johnson of any liability towards their blood thinner drug Xarelto on charge that it led to severe internal bleeding. The two companies are facing more than 18000 litigations on this count. However the two companies have been cleared in all the three trials that the two companies have faced so far. The ruling is blow for those claiming damages for harm caused by use of the drug.

The latest case is of Dora Mingo, who claimed that she suffered acute gastrointestinal bleeding when in 2015 she was treated with Xarelto for a month to prevent blood clotting post operation. She charged the company of not giving adequate warning about the risk of internal bleeding.

Bayer said in a statement, “Bayer stands behind the safety and efficacy of Xarelto and will continue to vigorously defend it.”

Andy Birchfield, one of Mingo’s lawyers, said, “We will continue fighting for the thousands of innocent victims injured or killed by this drug.”

Xarelto incidentally has turned into Bayer’s best-selling drug generating revenue of $3.41 billion where as J&J is reported to have earned revenue worth $2.2 billion from Xarelto alone.

The drug, Xarelto was approved by U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2011. The drug is prescribed for people with a common heart rhythm disorder known as atrial fibrillation. Further it is used to treat and reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolisms.
