Turkish court sentences journalists on terrorism charges

Istanbul: 14 journalists writing for opposition newspaper Cumhuriyet Daily were recently sentenced for different prison terms over terrorism-related charges.

Sentence ranges between four and eight years and journalist were accused of acting on behalf of a terrorist group without being members.

"At the first hearing in the case in July 2016, the suspects were indicted for sponsoring the The Kurdistan Workers' Party, Fetullah Terrorist Organisation , and leftist Revolutionary People's Liberation Party/Front terrorist groups."

However all 14 staff have been released pending an appeal.

Turkey has been facing major political upheaval and had faced a coup recently. Those accused of instigating coup were executed summarily.
