In view of the pandemic COVID-19, High Court of Punjab & Haryana on Monday (20.04.2020) suspended the sentence of two accused in two different cases.

While allowing the applications for suspension of sentence, the Court noted that the applicants are first-time offenders and their appeals were unlikely to be listed in the near future due to lockdown amid COVID-19 outbreak. Country-wide courts are merely hearing the most urgent cases.

The cases were heard by Justice Hari Pal Verma's single-judge bench, whereas allowing the application for suspension of the sentences given to both applicants and granting their release on bail, on furnishing his personal bonds to the Illaqa Magistrate / Duty Magistrate's satisfaction.

Besides, Justice Verma instructed applicants to comply with the administrative instructions/guidelines given because of the COVID-19 outbreak, including the maintenance of social distance and the prevention of community transmission during their release on bail.
