The Apex Court has requested the Search Committee on Lokpal  to recommend by the end of February a panel of names for appointing the country's first anti-graft ombudsman.

A Bench, headed by CJI Ranjan Gogoi and also comprised of Justices L N Rao and S K Kaul posted the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition filed by Advocate Prashant Bhushan on behalf of the NGO Common Cause for next hearing on March 7.

The search committee is headed by former Supreme Court Judge Ranjana Prakash Desai.

Appearing for the Centre, Attorney General K.K. Venugopal, told the bench there were certain problems like lack of infrastructure and manpower due to which the search committee was not able to hold deliberations on the issue.

The CJI has asked the Union Government to provide the search committee requisite infrastructure and manpower to enable it to complete its work.

The NGO had filed a contempt petition in SC against the Centre for not appointing the Lokpal despite an April 2017 Judgment by the SC.
