The Supreme Court bench of Justices R F Nariman and Vineet Saran passed an order regarding murders of activists Narendra Dabholkar, Govind Pansare and Gauri Lankesh and M M Kalburgi.

A petition was filed by Umadevi Kalburgi, widow of M M Kalburgi. Through the petition, she seeked CBI probe in the case. There were allegations made by her that there was common link between the murders of her husband and that of other mentioned deceased persons.
CBI was investigating Dabholkar murder case and found that the murders of Dabholkar and Lankesh were linked.

In December 2018, the apex court had ordered CBI to probe into the murders of Kalburgi, social activist Govind Pansare and journalist Gauri Lankesh to establish any common link in these incidents, if it existed. A SIT had already been constituted by the Karnataka government to probe Lankesh murder.
Justice Nariman was of the view that if all the 4 murders were linked, they must be investigated by one agency only. Hence, the Court ordered that the SIT to take over the investigation of Kalburgi case also.
