One of Singapore’s top Indian-origin intellectual property (IP) litigators, Dedar Singh Gill, has been appointed as the Judicial Commissioner to the Singapore Supreme Court by President Halimah Yacob.

According to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s office on Wednesday, Gill will be sworn in as Judicial Commissioner on August 3, and his appointment will be for a period of two years.

With Gill’s appointment, the apex court will now have a total of 21 judges.

Gill, 59, has more than 30 years of experience as an Intellectual Property Lawyer and has been representing corporate clients who are household names.

Gill previously worked as the managing director in the intellectual property department of Drew and Napier LLC's, a law firm where he spent most of his career since graduation.

Gill, who is presently a member of the Law Society of Singapore, the Singapore Academy of Law (SAL) and the International Trademark Association (INTA), has previously served as president of the Asian Patent Attorneys Association (APAA). He was also appointed as the deputy president of the Copyright Tribunal.

When asked about Gill’s departure, Davinder Singh, executive chairman of Drew and Napier, said, “While Gill’s departure will be a great and irreplaceable loss to the firm, his appointment to the Supreme Court will forever remain a matter of immense pride for Drew and Napier. I am confident that he will serve the country with distinction by enriching our jurisprudence with his sharp mind and wisdom,” Singh was quoted as saying in the Strait Times.
