On 19th April, a junior court assistant who was also a former employee in CJI Ranjan Gogoi's office had filed a complaint letter 20 a total of 22 Judges, alleging sexual harassment by Gogoi. In the letter, she narrated the whole series of events as to how he used to harass her and demand for sexual favors. When she resisted, she was allegedly targeted on the professional front as well as her family was targeted in criminal cases.

Senior Advocates Tushar Mehta and K.K. Venugopal labeled the act of complainant as an 'attack'. The secretary general of the Supreme Court sent a reply to this complaint in an email stating the following

“She worked as part of the home office of the Chief Justice of India only for a short period and there was no occasion to interact directly with the Chief Justice of India."

A woman's rights activist, Rashmi Singh said

“Women do need to speak up against acts like sexual harassment and women and other employees need to know what the true meaning of this act in letter and spirit. We should be able to create a safer and better working atmosphere for women,"

Supreme Court of India took suo-moto cognizance of the allegations and a notice was issued and circulated on 20 April. Following this, a special bench headed by the CJI himself heard the matter.

It was stated by the CJI that he was targeted, adding that for him honour came first with all these baseless allegations coming across as an apparent “conspiracy to malign" his image.

Acknowledging the communications received from the Wire, Leaflet, Caravan and Scroll, CJI mentioned

"All I would like to say is this, undoubtedly every employees are treated fairly and decently. This employee was there for a month and half. Allegations came and I didn't deem it appropriate to reply to the allegations."
