The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has appointed Senior Advocate Tushar Mehta as the new Solicitor General of India.

Mehta, who is currently serving as the Additional Solicitor General will serve as Solicitor General till June 30, 2020, or until further orders.

His appointment comes after more than 11 months of the post lying vacant following senior advocate Ranjit Kumar’s resignation from the post in October last year.

Mehta has been serving as Additional Solicitor General since the Narendra Modi-led government came to power at the Centre in 2014. During his tenure as Additional Solicitor General, Mehta has appeared for the Central Government in many significant cases, including the challenge to Section 66A of Information Technology Act.
