The Supreme Court will today hear a petition challenging the arrest of prominent human rights activists, lawyers in connection with the Bhima Koregaon violence.

The petition was filed by academician Romila Thapar and four right activists before a constitution bench of CJI Dipak Misra and Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Kurian Joseph, Rohinton Nariman and Indu Malhotra.

The petitioners seek an independent inquiry into the arrest and release of the detainees.

The petitioners further urged the court to demand explanation from the Maharashtra government for “sweeping round of arrests” in the case.

The Pune Police on Tuesday conducted simultaneous raids across several states, including Mumbai, Thane, Hyderabad, Ranchi, Delhi and Faridabad, and arrested activists and lawyers who were alleged to have links with the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist).

Those arrested by the Pune police are activist-lawyer Sudha Bharadwaj, civil rights activist and journalist Gautam Navlakha, revolutionary poet P Varavara Rao, and lawyers and activists Arun Ferreira and Vernon Gonsalves.

The detainees have been charged with criminal conspiracy, creating fear and enmity between various groups.

Since the CJI could not take up any urgent matter while heading a constitution bench, he asked senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi and others, appearing for the petitioners, to mention the matter at 3.45 pm before a three-judge bench.
