New Delhi: A SC bench comprising of Justices Madan B. Lokur and Deepak Gupta took NHAI by task when it learned that Eastern Peripheral Expressway which was built to De-congestionise Delhi has been lying ready by April 20, but has not been thrown open to public because PM who is suppose to inaugurate it did not have the date to throw it open to public.

The court directed the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to ensure that the newly constructed Eastern Peripheral Expressway is inaugurated on or before May 31.

Initially envisaged in 2005, the much delayed 135-km Expressway, which enables signal-free connectivity between Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Gautam Budh Nagar (Greater Noida) and Palwal, is the result of SC order aimed at building peripheral roads around Delhi which allows traffic not bound for Delhi to bypass the capital, thus to a large extent volume of traffic in the capital city will come down.

During the hearing the counsel for the Haryana government told the bench that so far only 81 per cent work of the 135-km Western Peripheral Expressway, which connects Kundli to Palwal via Manesar in Haryana was done and the private company involved in the work had promised that construction would be completed by June 30 this year. The work on the Western Peripheral Expressway was to be completed by February 2019.

Both Western and Eastern peripheral Expressway when completed would go a long way in De-congesting and De-polluting the capital.
