A Supreme Court bench headed by the newly-appointed CJI Ranjan Gogoi today dismissed the petition, filed by lawyer Prashant Bhushan, against the deportation of seven Rohingya Muslims to Myanmar as it refused to interfere with the Centre’s decision.

Advocate Bhushan has filed a plea, in the Supreme Court on Wednesday, requesting an urgent hearing to restraint Centre’s move to deport seven Rohingya Muslims – who were lodged in Assam’s Silchar Central Jail (also a detention camp for foreigners) since 2012 – back to Myanmar.

The SC bench, which also consisted of Justices S K Kaul and K M Joseph, said the competent court had found the seven Rohingyas as illegal immigrants and Myanmar had accepted them as its citizens.

The Bench then ruled, “We are not inclined to interfere on the decision taken”, while dismissing the petition filed by Prashant Bhushan.

To this, the lawyer said this court must realise its duty to protect stateless citizens, which Rohingya refugees are.

In response, CJI Gogoi said “We are fully aware of our responsibility towards right to life and no one needs to remind us about our responsibilities.”
