In a first, Supreme Court will now be open for common people from 10am to 1pm every Saturday, barring declared holidays.

The Apex Court as a “public institution” needed to be opened for general public but in a limited way on Saturdays, CJI Ranjan Gogoi said while inaugurating a portal through which citizens can book ‘guided tours’ to the top court.

During the portal inauguration, Chief Justice Gogoi said:

Idea to open up SC was entirely mine. I apologise that I did not consult any of my brother judges. But I am sure they have endorsed it.”

The tours will be conducted for a group of 20 at a time, and the visitors can schedule their visit through the official website of the Supreme Court of India.

The visitors will be accompanied by a Court official throughout the court premises, which includes Chief Justice’s Courtroom, Court lawns, the Judges Library, as well as the Court’s Museum among other things.

Online pre-booking is mandatory for the guided tour. For booking, one needs to click on the “Registration” tab under the “Guided Tour” on the court’s website and fill in the online form to confirm reservation. No fee is charged for the guided tour, but visitors are expected to comply with the rules and regulations, such as:

  • Visitors are forbidden to carry a camera or mobile phone inside the premises
  • Visitors cannot carry Eatables, Pan, Gutka, Mobile, Bagpacks during the guided tour [Meals and snacks can however be consumed in the canteen area].
  • Smoking is strictly denied inside the court building.
