The Supreme Court Collegium on Monday recommended names of four High Court Chief Justices – Justices R Subhash Reddy, Hemant Gupta, M R Shah, and Ajay Rastogi – for elevation to the Supreme Court.

The recommendations for the appointments to the Supreme Court come as two judges are due to retire by the year-end, including Justice Kurian Joseph (November 29) and justice M B Lokur (December 30). These retirements would have taken down the working strength of the apex court to 26 by year-end.

But, if the said appointments are cleared, it will bring the total strength of the Supreme Court to 28, against its sanctioned strength of 31 judges.

Justice R Subhash Reddy is currently the Chief Justice (CJ) of the Gujarat HC. Prior to being elevated as the CJ of the Gujarat High Court, Justice Reddy was sworn in as a permanent judge of the Andhra Pradesh HC in 2004.

Justice Hemant Gupta is currently serving as the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh HC. Before being appointed as High Court Chief Justice, he was tasked to head as the Acting Chief Justice of the Patna High Court.

Justice MR Shah was initially appointed as an additional judge of the Gujarat HC in 2004, and was later appointed as a permanent judge of the same court. He was elevated as the Chief Justice of Patna High Court in August, this year.

Justice Ajay Rastogi served as the Acting Chief Justice of Rajasthan HC for a month before being appointed as the Chief Justice of Tripura High Court.
