A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court has adjourned the hearing on the Ayodhya dispute case till January, next year. The bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices S K Kaul and K M Joseph said that the issue will come up before appropriate bench, during the first week of January, for fixing a schedule for hearing in the matter.

The apex court observation came while hearing a batch of petitions challenging the Allahabad High Court’s 2010 judgment which ruled that the disputed land on the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid area in Ayodhya, be divided into three parts – the Sunni Waqf Board, the Nirmohi Akhara and Ram Lalla.

Case background:

The top court had on September 27 refused to refer to a five-judge constitution bench the issue for reconsideration of the observations in its 1994 ruling – that a mosque is not integral to Islam.

And by a majority verdict of 2:1, the SC bench led by former CJI Dipak Misra had said the Babri Masjid-Ram Janmabhoomi civil suit has to be decided based on the evidence, and the previous verdict has no relevance to it. The bench then scheduled the matter for further hearing on October 29.

The 16th century Babri mosque was demolished in 1992 after lakhs of karsewaks or Right-wing volunteers had demanded the mosque to be brought down, in order to build a temple of Lord Ram, who they said, had been born right there. The issue has been politically fraught ever since.
