Justice Ranjan Gogoi has been sworn in as the 46th Chief Justice of India.

President Ram Nath Kovind administered the oath of office to Justice Ranjan Gogoi at a brief ceremony in the Darbar Hall of Rashtrapati Bhawan.

Justice Gogoi, 63, assumes office following the retirement of CJI Misra yesterday.

Justice Gogoi will serve the tenure as Chief Justice of India a little over 13 months till his retirement on November 17, 2019.

Here’s what all you need to know about the newly appointed Chief Justice of India:

  1. Chief Justice Gogoi is the first CJI from the north-east.
  2. CJI Gogoi was born on November 18, 1954, and is the son of the ex chief minister of Assam, Keshab Chandra Gogoi.
  3. He joined the bar in 1978 and practiced mainly in the Gauhati High Court. He was appointed as the permanent judge of the Gauhati HC on February 28, 2001.
  4. Chief Justice Gogoi was transferred to the Punjab and Haryana HC on September 9, 2010 following a nine-year-long stint at Gauhati HC.
  5. On February 12, 2011, he was appointed as the Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana HC and elevated as judge of the Supreme Court on April 23, 2012.
  6. CJI Gogoi appointment as the CJI brings an end to the speculations of his elevation, because of the unprecedented press conference on January 12 this year. At the press conference, Justice Gogoi along with three other SC judges raised questions on the now retired CJI Dipak Misra regarding allocation of cases to benches in the Supreme Court.
  7. Justice Gogoi is recognized as a stickler for discipline, and has garnered a reputation for being a judge who bluntly speaks his mind. For instance, a few months ago, he had described “independent journalists and sometimes noisy judges as democracy’s first line of defence”.
  8. Justice Gogoi had created quite a stir in 2016, when he slapped a contempt notice to a retired judge of the apex court, Justice Markandey Katju. Justice Katju had, in a Facebook post, criticised the apex court’s judgment authored by Justice Gogoi in the Soumya rape and murder case. The judgment had invited wide criticism and heated debates in the legal circle, which is an indication that Justice Gogoi is not one to be wavered by public opinion and media pressure.
  9. Chief Justice Gogoi’s colleagues in the SC term him as “a man of few words, strong and deep convictions and also a man of action. He speaks little but acts.”
