Proposal to Set up Social Media Hub Withdrawn: Centre tells SC

The Centre today told the Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra that it has withdrawn the proposal to create a Social media hub.

The Centre’s submission came just weeks after the apex court had warned the government to snoop into’s citizens’ social media (WhatsApp) activities.

At the outset of the hearing, India's Attorney General K K Venugopal told the SC bench, which also had Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, “The petition has become infructuous. We are withdrawing the RFP (Request For Proposal)”.

Following AG’s submission the bench disposed of the plea filed by Trinamool Congress (TMC) legislator Mahua Moitra, saying “the Union of India submits that it has withdrawn its request for proposal to set up social media hubs. In view of the aforesaid nothing remains to be adjudicated”.
