The Supreme Court today, has annulled the Gujrat HC’s verdict wherein the court directed the State Government to provide funds for the re-establishment of religious shrines destroyed during the 2002 post-Godhra riots.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice Deepak Mishra and Justice PC Pant agreed to hear the petition filed by the Gujrat Government, challenging the Gujrat High Court’s order of asking the Government to compensate the victims and provide funds for the reconstruction of religious shrines destroyed during the riots, especially Mosques.

Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta appearing for the State Government stated that “our plea has been accepted” and besides the State will provide repair funds for the ruined structures, shops, and houses with a moral obligation.

The Supreme Court has decided to hear the plea challenging Gujrat High Court order of directing State to provide reimbursements and repair money to over 500 shrines destroyed in 2002 during the Post-Godhra riots.
