Former Pakistani cricket star Imran Khan is leading the race to become the country's new prime minister amid vote-rigging allegations. However, he will have to wait because of delay in declaration of results.

While dismissing the vote-rigging claims, Secretary of Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Babar Yaqoob said vote counting was delayed due to technical glitches in an electronic reporting system.

However, the counting is now conducted manually and would likely continue till late Thursday afternoon, Mr Yaqoob added.

Meanwhile, “Based on reporting of 42% of polling stations, PTI is leading on 112 seats, while PML-N trails behind with 65 and PPP is at third spot with lead on 43 seats”, according to Pakistan's Dawn news agency.

However, Pakistan's ruling Islamic party rejected early election results that suggested Khan was on his way to becoming the country’s next PM, alleging "blatant" rigging.

The leader of the Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Shahbaz Sharif, also rejected the results from Wednesday's nationwide poll as counting was still underway.

“Today what they have done has pushed Pakistan back 30 years ... We reject this result,” Mr Sharif was quoted as saying while addressing a press conference in Lahore.

“People will not bear it,” he added.

Mr Sharif, who is the brother of Pakistan's jailed former PM Nawaz Sharif, didn't provide any evidence for his claims though.

Pakistan election has been marred by widespread rigging claims by the powerful military in favour of Khan, which saw it dubbed Pakistan's “dirtiest election”.

Further, as election workers continued sorting massive piles of paper ballots, other parties contesting the elections, including the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) also alleged that counting was being manipulated.

“My candidates complaining polling agents have been thrown out of polling stations across the country”, tweeted Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, leader of the PPP.

Delay in vote count is inexcusable & outrageous”, Zardari added.

However, Chief Election Commissioner Sardar Mohammad Raza rejected the claims made by PPP leader Zardari, saying “these elections were 100 per cent fair and transparent”.

With the vote count still underway, supporters of Khan's party were already seen celebrating in cities across the country.
