NGT slaps Rs 5L fine on educational institutions for not installing rainwater harvesting systems

The National Green Tribunal has imposed a penalty of Rs 5 lakh each on educational institutions including 929 Delhi government schools, 12 colleges under Directorate of Higher Education and 106 schools of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation.in the national capital for failing to install rainwater harvesting systems.

A bench of Justice Raghuvendra S Rathore and Expert member Dr Satyawan Singh Garbyal also rapped the Delhi Government for its failure to install rainwater harvesting system in schools and colleges, asking them to complete construction work the system within two weeks.

It also imposed a cost of Rs 5,000 each on Binay Bhushan, Special Director Education, J.P. Aggarwal, Director, Higher Education and Geeta Kumari, Deputy Director Education (Primary), South Delhi Municipal Corporation for non-execution of its orders in respect of rainwater harvesting. The fine was imposed as per NGT's November 16, 2017 order which had said that any institution which fails to install the rainwater harvesting system within within two months would be liable to pay environment compensation of Rs 5 lakh.
