As part of its efforts to ameliorate the devastating effects of Cyclone Gaja, which hit parts of Tamil Nadu last month, the Madras Bar Association (MBA) has called on neighbouring Bar associations in Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra to pitch in.

To mobilise relief material from members of the Madras Bar, the MBA has already organised two cyclone relief camps at the HC.

On November 30, cyclone relief materials were collected for distribution in the cyclone hit area of Pudukottai. The distribution of the relief materials so conducted was supervised the District and Sessions Judge and Magistrates at Pudukkottai.

On December 7, a second cyclone relief camp was organised by the MBA, and the materials so collected were dispatched by truck to the cyclone hit area of Nagapattinam, in the presence of Madras HC judges, Justices CT Selvam, PN Prakash, V Bharathidasan, D Krishnakumar, MV Muralidharan, M Govindraj, MS Ramesh, SM Subramaniam CV Karthikeyan, and N Sathish Kumar.

All cyclone relief materials were segregated and packed by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel under the supervision of Commander Sriram. The distribution of the same at the flood-hit areas was entrusted with judicial officers in the area.

Apart from a collection of relief materials, several members of the Madras bar, as well as judges, have made monetary contributions towards the cause.

Relief efforts have also been undertaken at the SC, with Justice R Banumathi, who hails from Tamil Nadu, being actively involved in the process. Recently, the Tamil Nadu Clerks Association also handed over Rs 50,000 towards the cyclone relief.

Plans for a third relief collection drive are in the works at the Madras HC. The MBA has also called on fellow lawyers in neighbouring Bar associations to join in on the efforts to aid cyclone relief. Any person willing to contribute may make the donation by Demand Draft or Cheque in favour of “MBA Welfare & Charitable Trust“.
