Madras High Court laments fall in standard of legal profession

The Justice N Kirubakaran of  Madras high court made a stunning observation while hearing a writ petition by advocates Bhaskar Maduram and Lenin Kumar challenging the new guidelines introduced by the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry for contesting the elections to the bar body. The  special committee of the council had passed a resolution on January 24 prescribing certain rules for elections due on March 28.

He observed  that the noble profession of advocates has reached the "most worst condition" and nowadays  the "only aim" of the lawyers is to fill their pockets.

The guidelines state that only advocates practising continuously for 10 years would be eligible to contest the election.Further it bars, those  lawyers from contesting who have been punished for contempt of court or holding official position in any political party or founder of a party.Besides those against whom disciplinary proceedings are on in the state bar council, can also not contest.

The counsel wanted the judgement to be delivered on February 12 as it was the last date of filing of the nomination. The court said order is being prepared and it will be delivered on February 16.

The judge further said a section of advocates is "spoiling the honour of the profession, and over the past eight years it has totally spoiled. Even the senior advocates without taking initiates to save this noble profession were keen on filling their pockets", he observed.
