Law Commission has expressed shock over the recent findings of Bar Council of Tamil Nadu that revealed one P Natarajajn served as Judge for 21 years without having a valid law degree.

By the time the fact came out, he had already retired. And now piled up letters to the commission have been seeking information about status of orders passed by Natarajan and steps to prevent "fake judges" from holding office.

"I have got three letters asking what the sanctity of the judgments and orders passed by this particular judge is?" said Justice Balbir Singh Chauhan, Chairman Law Commission, while addressing a law conference, adding it is a very relevant and serious question.

P Natarajan, who served as a judicial magistrate and now practices as a lawyer and even draws pension for his judicial stint, has been served a show-cause notice by Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherrry as to why his enrollment cannot be cancelled.

The shocking fact was revealed during a lawyers certificate verification drive ordered by the Supreme Court in 2006, following reports that said the country had several such fake lawyers.

In his defence, Natarajan had said, “I got my legal degree from a private college in Karnatka. I was not informed at convocation that my degree was valid only for academic purposes and not employment”. [Source: IndiaToday]
