The Haryana government decision to double the incentive for inter-caste marriages doesn’t seem to have gone down well with the khap panchayat. Barely after 10 days the government announced its decision, the Sarv Khap Sarv Jat Mahapanchayat held a meeting at Meham seeking action against the runaway couples who marry against the “society’s norms”.

Aithgama khap Shamsher Kharkhara, president of Sarvkhap Sarvjat Mahapanchayat, while addressing a gathering of khaps at Meham said “youths marrying within same gotra, village and neighbourhood or brotherhood villages leads to discord between families”.

“Society and parents never approve of such relations, but the courts have now given legitimacy to such marriages, which was against the society’s culture and tradition”, he further claimed.

Kharkhara then quoted the example of Jallikuttu, saying that though SC banned the celebration of the religious event, the top court had to reconsider its decision following widespread protest. He further continued saying that a delegation of khap leaders would soon meet the Union law minister asking for amendment in the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955.

Sukhbir Farmana, former MLA of Haryana, who also attended the meeting asked the participants to make their voice heard in support of amendment in the Hindu Marriage Act, by holding massive protests on roads to press for their demand. The khap leaders, on the other hand, passed resolution to stop practices such as playing DJs in marriage functions, uploading of obscene content on internet, and more.
