Justice Syeda Tahira Safdar Will Be the First Woman Chief Justice of a Pakistani HC

Justice Syeda Tahira Safdar will be appointed as the next Chief Justice of Balochistan High Court, Chief Justice of Pakistan Saqib Nisar announced at a book launch in Lahore on Monday.

Justice Tahira Safdar will replace Balochistan HC Chief Justice Muhammad Noor Meskanzai, who is scheduled to retire on August 31. She will serve as BHC’s chief justice till October 5 next year.

Justice Safdar is currently a part of a three-judge special court, which has been hearing the treason case against ex-military ruler Pervez Musharraf.

Interestingly, besides getting nominated as the first woman chief justice of the BHC, Justice Tahira made history when she became the first woman to be appointed as a civil judge in Balochistan. In fact, she also enjoys the distinction of being the first lady in Pakistan to be appointed in all posts she served.

Daughter of reputed lawyer, Syed Imtiaz Hussain Baqri Hanafi, Justice Tahira was born on October 5, 1957, in Quetta. She did her Masters in Urdu Literature from the University of Balochistan, and completed her degree in law from the University Law College, Quetta.
