Justice Rajiv Sharma appointed as new Chief Justice of Uttarakhand High Court

Justice Rajiv Sharma has been named as the acting chief justice of the Uttarakhand High Court, following elevation of Justice K M Joseph as Supreme Court Judge.

Justice Sharma, who is known to have delivered landmark judgments, including banning animal sacrifice in religious places, granting living entity status to Ganga and Yamuna, was on Monday appointed as the CJ of the Uttarakhand HC.

A notification regarding Justice Sharma’s appointment was issued by the Union law ministry, stated “in exercise of the powers conferred by article 223 of the Constitution Of India, the President is pleased to appoint Justice Rajiv Sharma, senior most judge of the Uttarakhand high court , to perform the duties of the office of the chief justice of that high court with effect from date Justice KM Joseph relinquishes charge of the office consequent upon his appointment as a judge of the Supreme Court of India”.

Born in 1958, Justice Sharma has until now decided more than 71,000 cases.

Further, Justice Sharma obtained his LLB degree from the Himachal Pradesh University and enrolled as an advocate in 1982. He became a senior advocate in 2002 and mostly practiced in the High Court of Himachal Pradesh in constitutional law, administrative law, employment cases and environmental law.

Justice Sharma was appointed as an additional judge in Himachal Pradesh HC in April 2007 and was later confirmed as a permanent judge in March 2013. He was then transferred to the Uttarakhand high court in September 2016.
