Justice Kurian Joseph, the third senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, demitted his office on Thursday.

Known for his “pleasant smile” and “speaking out his mind on contentious issues”, Justice Kurian while speaking at a farewell function organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) urged lawyers to speak out, saying:

Silence of the law is more damage to the society than the violence of lawless men.”

Justice Kurian also stressed on the need for compassion to be shown by the judges and said:

The compassion from court is not a charity of a judge, but a bounden duty of a constitutional court. When you approach the question of compassionate appointment, the first thing is the judges should have compassion. Unless the judges have compassion there is no point in interpreting the law on compassion appointments.”

Bidding farewell to Justice Joseph, CJI Gogoi said, “Good judges are going away and we need replacements.”

Attorney General of India, KK Venugopal, while speaking at the farewell function called Justice Joseph as “one of the nicest judges he has seen in the Supreme Court since the 1960s and he has been a judge with a pleasant smile.”

Further, AG Venugopal and SCBA President Vikas Singh shared a common thought about Justice Joseph. Both the AG and Singh said lawyers preferred their matters to be listed before Justice Kurian Joseph, as he always gave everyone a patient hearing with a smile on his face.

He ranks the top ten Supreme Court judges who have written more than 1000 verdicts during their judgeship,” SCBA President Singh further pointed out while addressing the farewell function for Justice Kurian.

Earlier in the day, members of the bar including Singh have also showered praises and wishes for Justice Joseph and said, “We will always miss your smile.”
