Judicial appointments: Supreme Court dismisses plea seeking Centre's response on delay in MOP

The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday rejected a petition seeking the Centre's response over the delay in finalising the Memorandum of Procedure for appointment of judges.

A three judge bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra sought an explanation from the Centre for the delay in finalising the memorandum of procedure (MOP) for appointment of judges to the Supreme Court and High Courts and which also questioned continuing appointments even when the MOP had not been finalised.

"These are not matters to be taken up on the judicial side and so we are dismissing the petition," Chief Justice Dipak Misra said, disagreeing with the other two judges, Justice UU Lalit and Justice AK Goel, who had issued the notice to the Centre on October 27.

"You don't know what all steps we have taken and we do not intend to say it here," Misra told an advocate RP Luthra who filed the petition.

A bench of justices Adarsh Kumar Goel and U U Lalit had on October 27 issued notice to Centre on the issue and sought the presence of Attorney General K K Venugopal.
