Special CBI Court of Ajay Kumar Kuhar, Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) has extended the judicial custody of former Union Minister P. Chidambaram till October 03 in the INX Media Corruption allegations case registered by CBI.

The Court had earlier sent Chidambaram to 14 days judicial custody on September 05 and he was produced before the Court today wherein the CBI again sought for an extension of his judicial custody.

Appearing for Chidambaram, Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Manu Singhvi informed the Court about the concerning health issues faced by Chidambaram in the jail premises.

The CBI’s plea for extension was also rebutted by counsels appearing for Chidambaram stating that there were no sufficient reasons for keeping him in judicial custody and argued that for extending the judicial custody, the Judge has to give justifiable reasons for the same.

The CBI was represented by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta who responded by saying that where the health of an inmate is concerned, the jail authorities would take all the necessary steps permissible under the law.

The Senior Congress Leader was arrested on August 21 by CBI from his jorbagh residence and remained in CBI custody till September 5, after which, Chidambaram was sent to judicial custody.

Chidambaram’s bail plea is already pending before the Delhi High Court is scheduled to be heard on September 23.

The INX Media cases are being investigated by top most agencies of the nation – CBI and Enforcement Directorate regarding corruption and money laundering charges respectively with respect to the irregularities in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance given by P. Chidambaram in 2007 to media group INX Media receiving overseas funds to the tune of Rs 307 crore.

P. Chidambaram was the Union Finance Minister in 2007 during the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government when the clearance was given by him.
