Following Justice Anthony Kennedy’s announcement of his retirement from the U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday has opened the flood-gates of speculation as to who will President Donald Trump choose as his replacement.

Justice Kennedy met Trump at the White House last afternoon shortly after he told his colleagues in the Apex Court that July 31 would be his last working day.

Reacting to his retirement, Trump told the reporters that he would nominate Justice Kennedy’s replacement from the list compiled by the Heritage Foundation and the Federalist Society; several American media outlets later identified Amul Thapar as among the shortlisted potential nominees on Trump's Supreme Court List.

Amul Thapar, 49, is an Indian-American judge whom Trump last year has appointed as a judge on the 6th US Circuit Court of Appeals.

Prior to his appointment to the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals, Mr. Thapar was selected by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to serve as U.S attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky. He was also the nation’s first Article III judge of South Asian descent.
