Today, The Supreme Court issued notice to the State of Uttar Pradesh in a petition filed by the survivor of the Hapur lynching incident.

The Court also directed the Inspector General of Police, Meerut Range to file a report after holding an inquiry.

A Bench of CJI Dipak Misra and Justices DY Chandrachud and AM Khanwilkar heard Senior Counsel KV Viswanathan before proceeding to issue notice in the matter.

Viswanathan told the Court that there is an effort to paint the incident as “road rage”.

The Court immediately issued notice and also asked the IG, Meerut Range to submit a report to the court.

Viswanathan further apprised the Bench of the concerns of the petitioners regarding their safety.

The Bench gave the petitioners liberty to approach the Superintendent of Police (SP) with their concerns. The SP will have to ensure that the needful is done.

The matter is now listed for hearing on August 28.
