During the Gujarat riots in 2002, a girl was gang raped. Her age was 21 years at the time of incident and her 3 year old child was killed in the riots.

The police officers were convicted by the Gujarat High Court. Apart from the conviction, the victim sought disciplinary proceedings against these officials. The Gujarat Government had offered her a compensation of Rs 5 lakhs. But, rejecting the offer, the victim approached the Apex Court seeking exemplary compensation.
