As per directions given by the Madras High Court, the Tamil Nadu government has issued a notification inviting applications for the appointment of Law Officers.

The bench of Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice Abdul Quddhose gave the directions while hearing a PIL filed by Advocate V Vasanthkumar.

The advocate had approached the Court raising objections over the lack of transparency in the appointment of the officers to the Madras HC in reference to the Law Officers of High Court of Madras and its Bench at Madurai (Appointment) Rules, 2017.

Responding to the concerns raised by the petitioner, the HC bench had passed an order directing that the state government to formulate guidelines for making the selection more transparent.

Further, the Court also directed the state government that as and when applications are invited from eligible advocates for appointment as Law Officers, notices intimating the same should be put up in places including recognised bar associations.

Accordingly, the state government has on July 25 issued a notification regarding the notice displayed on the notice board of the Madras Bar Association for the benefit of interested Advocates.

The Notification has intimated a total of 66 vacancies, 38 being at the principal bench of the High Court and 28 being at the Madurai Bench. The existing vacancies are as follows:
