A former chief standing counsel of the Uttar Pradesh (UP) government, Ramesh Chandra Pandey, allegedly committed suicide after jumping off the new building of the Allahabad HC’s Lucknow bench on Tuesday afternoon.

Pandey was rushed to Dr Ram Manohar Lohia hospital, where the doctors pronounced him brought dead.

Police investigating the matter said the reason behind Pandey taking the extreme step is yet to be ascertained.

However, the lawyers who reached the hospital following the incident had different versions of the sequence of events leading to Pandey’s death.

While some lawyers claimed that Pandey committed suicide as he was under some pressure, a few others suggested foul play and demanded that police should register a murder case. However, no formal complaint was immediately lodged with the police.

Pandey, who was appointed as chief standing counsel last year had resigned from the post on July 19 this year. And, according to some lawyers, Pandey was planning to contest the election for the post of president of the Oudh Bar Association following his resignation as UP’s standing counsel.
