Justice Abhay Thipsay, an ex judge of the Bombay and Allahabad high courts on Tuesday joined the Congress party.

Thipsay, who is yet to be formally inducted, was welcomed by Congress president Rahul Gandhi and senior leader Ashok Gehlot, during the party event held in Mumbai.

Thipsay had retired as the Allahabad High Court judge in March 2017. He earlier served as a judge in the Bombay High Court.

When asked about his decision to join Congress, he said, "After my retirement, I was disturbed with the growing communalism and aggressive nationalism. I can't do anything alone and was seeking a platform."

He further went on saying that, though several other political parties had approached him in the last year, but he was interested in the Congress party.

Justice Abhay Thipsay had dealt with several high-profile cases in his career, including Sohrabuddin Sheikh encounter case, in which he questioned the way several high-profile accused in the case were discharged.

Thipsay courted controversy for granting Salman Khan bail, on the same day the actor was convicted by a Sessions Court, in a hit and run case.
