  • Petition seeks registration of FIRs against BJP leaders Kapil Mishra, Anurag Thakur and Parvesh Verma for hate speech inciting violence.

  • The plea also seeks to provide access to family members and legal aid for the detained people.

New Delhi: On Tuesday, the Delhi High Court agreed to hear a written petition seeking to establish a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the violence incident in North-East Delhi and compensate those killed and injured in the violence. The matter was raised before a panel of judges, Justice GS Sistani and Justice Anup Jairam Bhambani, who will hear the matter.

The petition filed by human rights activist Harsh Mander seeks FIR registration against BJP leaders Kapil Mishra, Anurag Thakur and Parvesh Verma for hate speech inciting violence. The plea also seeks to provide access to family members and legal aid for the detained people. It has also asked for evidence preservation and CCTV footage of all cameras in and around the sites of the protest.

It also sought directions for the Army Deployment Center to maintain law and order in the national capital and in areas where the “communal attack on people is most fierce.”

For an order directing a retired judge to enquire into the communal attacks that took place as described in this petition and to identify the police persons involved in the rioting and criminal conduct and thereafter direct that these police officers be dismissed from service in accordance with law. For an order directing exemplary compensation to be paid to those who were killed or injured,” The plea said.

On Tuesday, hours after Union Home Minister Amit Shah called for an urgent meeting with Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to discuss the law and order situation in the city, fresh violence erupted in the National capital.

Nine people died and more than 100 injured in stone pelting incidents and violent clashes in north-east Delhi. The violence comes in the midst of crucial talks between U.S. President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on a visit to India. Chief Minister Kejriwal said after the meeting that the Delhi government was assured of "more troops" if necessary.

Areas of Delhi's North-East district have been experiencing violent clashes over Sunday and Monday. Things turned nasty after clashes in Chandbagh, Bhajanpura and Gokulpuri on Monday, between protesters and supporters of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, with shops set ablaze and properties vandalized.
