Delhi High Court Grants Parole To Convict For LLM Exam in Priyadarshini Mattoo Case

The Delhi High Court on 14 May granted 3 week parole to Santosh Kumar Singh, who is serving life imprisonment for the 1996 rape and murder of law student Priyadarshini Mattoo, to attempt his LLM examination. Justice Mukta Gupta permitted the parole to him to appear in final year examination of LLM. The court said Santosh examinations are scheduled in the month of May from 24. He is to be released from jail on May 21 after the Delhi government did not oppose the plea.


Priyadarshini Mattoo, 25, was raped and murdered in January 1996. Santosh Krumar, a law student of Delhi University and was acquitted by the trial court on December 3, 1999,  but the Delhi High Court on October 27, 2006 reversed the order, held him guilty of rape and murder and awarded him death penalty. Singh, was son of a former IPS officer, and also challenged his conviction and death sentence awarded by the high court. In October 2010, the Supreme Court upheld Singh's conviction and converted the death sentence to life imprisonment.
