The Delhi High Court, which is currently functioning with half its sanctioned strength, may soon get new judges with the Supreme Court Collegium recommending elevation of five lawyers to the HC as judges.

The names that the Collegium has recommended, for appointment as HC judges are:

  1. Jyoti Singh
  2. Prateek Jalan
  3. Anup Jairam Bhambhani
  4. Sanjeev Narula
  5. Manoj Kumar Ohri

The recommendation for elevation of nine advocates as HC judges was made, by the then Delhi HC’s Acting Chief Justice, Gita Mittal, on October 13, 2017, to the SC Collegium comprising of CJI Dipak Misra, Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Madan B Lokur.

However, only five of the nine names were recommended by the Collegium, which, if approved by the Central Government would take the strength of the Delhi High Court judges to 38 against a sanctioned strength of 60.

The rest of the four names including advocates Priya Kumar, Krishnendu Datta, Sanjoy Ghose and Saurabh Kirpal were deferred by the Collegium.

But the proposal regarding the elevation of advocates Saurabh Kirpal and Sanjoy Ghose is likely to be taken up for consideration by the Collegium after some time.
