NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court issued notice to the Election Commission of India (ECI) in response to a petition seeking directions and guidelines for holding and regulating internal political party elections.

C Rajashekaran, advocate, filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition demanding that the procedure for internal elections be included and made a part of the concerned political party's Constitution.

The matter was heard by a bench consisting of Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice Jyoti Singh, who ordered the ECI to file its response by December 23, when the case will be heard again.

Rajashekaran, a founding member of Kamal Hasan's political party Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), had previously filed a similar PIL in the High Court, which was dismissed with instructions to the ECI to treat the petition as a representation.

Even so, Rajashekaran's lawyer told the Court that the ECI's reply to his representation was unsatisfactory.

Rajashekaran had previously claimed that most political parties internal elections are a sham in which the winner is already determined.
