Addressing a political rally in Alwar, PM Modi on Sunday accused the Congress party of threatening a SC judge with impeachment for not stalling the top court proceedings on the Ram Temple-Babri Masjid case – until the general elections in 2019.

Without taking any name, the Prime Minister claimed that some Congress-affiliated lawyers in the Supreme Court had tried to scare the judge to ensure the hearing was delayed until after the 2019 polls.

Although PM Modi didn’t disclose the name of the judge, but apparently, his reference was to the former CJI Dipak Misra against whom an impeachment motion was moved by the Congress-led opposition parties on 20 April, this year. However, the impeachment notice was rejected was the Rajya Sabha Chairperson M. Venkaiah Naidu.

While speaking at the rally, the PM said that the Congress leaders in Rajya Sabha had no faith in democracy and the judiciary.

It does not hold a dialogue and stalls proceedings in Parliament, but the new game Congress is playing is dangerous and must be debated,” PM Modi further added.

The Prime Minister then said:

If a Supreme Court judge does not prepare the timetable (for hearing cases) in keeping with its (the Congress’s) political intentions and wants to hear everyone to deliver justice on a serious and sensitive issue, such as Ayodhya, then the party’s lawyers, who are Rajya Sabha members, start the game of scaring the judges in the name of impeachment.”

Modi also slammed the Congress for launching personal attacks against him, saying that “Congress is stooping to a new low and has forgotten all etiquette of politics. It lacks courage for development, with no vision for Rajasthan and has no answers for infighting within the party, the election issue for them has become what is Modi’s caste?

The PM’s remarks were a reaction to the ex Union minister CP Joshi’s statement, in which the minister had cited the caste affiliations of Modi and a few other BJP leaders to question their right to talk about Hinduism, saying Brahmins alone understood religion — a comment for which party president Rahul Gandhi forced him to apologise.

The Prime Minister also attacked the opposition party over a recent video doing the rounds on social media wherein a Congress candidate from Rajasthan is seen stopping supporters from shouting ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ and rather prompting them to say ‘Sonia Gandhi ki Jai’.

For us, the country is bigger than the party but for them, Sonia Gandhi is bigger than Bharat Mata,” Modi said.
