CJI Ranjan Gogoi on Monday constituted three more Benches in the top court, taking the number of Supreme Court Benches to fourteen from eleven.

The constitution of new SC benches is in line with Chief Justice Gogoi's efforts – to improve efficiency in the functioning of the courts – since the time he took charge. The CJI, in fact, had given indication of this change a few days back, while addressing an advocate where he had remarked:

A thousand new cases are filed every week. We have 11 benches as of now which hear 40 cases each on Mondays and Fridays. So, 440 fresh matters each are being heard every Monday and Friday- 880 new cases in a week. Give us a solution? Which are the 120 items which we should delete? If there were 13-14 benches, we could hear all.”

Further, the Supreme Court’s new roster system has been notified and will come into effect from November 19. The new roster, however, remains largely the same. PILs (Public Interest Litigations) will still be heard by the Chief Justice of India, with only a few PILs to be listed before Justice MB Lokur as well, as per the directions of CJI Gogoi.

Former Chief Justice of India, Dipak Misra, had introduced the subject-wise roster system in SC in February this year soon after the four senior-most SC judges held an unprecedented press conference, asserting that the top court’s administration is “not in order” and that several “less desirable” things have happened in the last few months.
