New Delhi: The link between Aadhaar and the voter ID is on the cards with the Center informing the Election Commission that it has moved to amend the Aadhaar Act in order to link the unique identification number with the electoral roll.

The move will help smooth out bogus and duplicate entries and pave the way for migrant voters to have "remote" voting rights.

The law ministry conveyed to the Election Commission during a meeting discussing electoral reforms that the Center is preparing to make the necessary legal amendment to the Aadhaar Act. The amendment will legally authorize the Election Commission to link Aadhaar to the identity card of the voter.

The government was favorably inclined to link voters list with Aadhaar numbers, and a Cabinet note would soon be moved to amend the Aadhaar Act, the report citing EC sources said.

As part of its National Electoral Roll Purification and Authentication Programme, the EC took up the linking of voter card and Aadhaar number in 2015. About 32 crore Aadhaar numbers were collected when, in the light of the Supreme Court judgment limiting the use of Aadhaar, the EC stopped the project.

EC officials say the link will solve two issues highlighted by the commission — the issue of duplication in electoral rolls, and allowing citizens to vote from anywhere.
