Centre appoints Sr. Advocate R. Venkataramani as new Attorney General of India

New Delhi: R Venkataramani, Senior Advocate at the Supreme Court, has been appointed as India's 15th Attorney General (AG).

The 72-year-old Venkataramani, who has spent 34 years in the Supreme Court, will succeed 91-year-old incumbent AG K K Venugopal, whose term ends on September 30.

The term of the appointment is three years. The Law Ministry issued a notification to that effect on Wednesday. The Attorney General of India is the Indian government's chief legal advisor and its Principal Advocate before the Supreme Court of India. The AG is appointed by the President of India.

Venkataramani was enrolled in the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu in July 1977 and began practicing before the Supreme Court in 1979. The Supreme Court designated him as Senior Advocate in 1997.

He was appointed as a Member of the Law Commission in 2010 and was re-appointed in 2013. Venkataramani was involved in the Constitution Review Commission Work under the chairmanship of Justice Venkatachelliah as part of his other professional engagements.
