Asaram convicted on charges of raping teen in 2013, given life term

Jodhpur: Once a revered figure , the self styled Godman Asaram was today sentenced 20 years in prison after he was found guilty of raping a teenage girl in his ashram five years ago. Two of his accomplices Sharad and Shilpi, were sentenced to 20 years each in jail in the case while remaining two co-accused Shiva and Prakash were acquitted. He has also been fined Rs 1 lakh. The court after finding Asaram guilty on April 7, had fixed April 25 as the date for announcing the quantum of punishment.

Self-styled godman Asaram was on Wednesday sentenced to life-long jail term by a special SC/ST court for raping a minor girl from Shahjahanpur,UP  nearly five years ago. The girl came to stay in Asaram's Ashram in Chindwara in MP for studies. The victim stated in her complaint Asaram had called her to his Ashram in Manai area near Jodhpur and raped her on the night of August 15, 2013.Subsequently he was arrested in Indore and put in Jodhpur prison ever since.The trial initially was started in Jodhpur session court and given the gravity of the case was later shifted to special SC/ST court in Jodhpur itself.

As per the order of Rajasthan High Court the verdict was given by Additional Sessions Judge Madhusudan Sharma, while holding a special court in the precincts of Jodhpur prison .There was apprehension of violent protest by Asaram's supporters.

During the trial, Asaram made several efforts to get bail but each time different courts rejected his bail application.He tried 12 times to get bail from sessions court , six times from trial court and three times each from Rajasdthan High Court and three times with Supreme Court too.
