Advocate Madhavi Divan has been appointed Additional Solicitor General (ASG) in the Supreme Court.  The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment and Divan will hold office till June 30, 2020.

Divan becomes only the third woman to become an ASG in the SC. The first person to be so appointed was Senior Advocate Indira Jaising while the second was Senior Advocate Pinky Anand who is currently incumbent.

Madhavi  Divan is one of the applicants for a Senior gown in the Supreme court. She would be the only lawyer who is not a Senior Advocate in the current batch of law officers in the SC.

Madhavi  Divan obtained a degree in English at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University, and then went on to pursue law at Pembroke College, University of Cambridge, UK. After starting her practice at the Bombay High Court, Divan moved to the Supreme Court, where she has represented two state governments – Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. She is also an accomplished author.

Earlier, PS Narasimha and Maninder Singh had resigned as ASG leaving the Centre’s legal team in SC depleted. Both Narasimha and Singh had served as ASG for over four years.
