A legal notice has been served to the TV news channel Aaj Tak from the Bar Council of Delhi (BCD) for showing lawyers in bad light in one of its programs.

In one of the promos aired on TV for its program, ‘Sare Jahan se Sacha’, the channel is depicting negotiations between a lawyer and his client about a rape case. In the promo the lawyer is saying “bachhche hain, galti ho jaati hai” and “shamelessly demanding fees and extracting bundle of notes from a client to do the needful”.

In its notice sent through honorary secretary Vishnu Sharma, the Bar Council of Delhi has said:

The contents of the advertisement/promo of your TV program in toto are against the dignity, integrity and image of the noble profession of lawyers, apart from the contents being absolutely unethical, unprofessional and demeaning the whole issue of crime and violence against women, which is not expected from an esteemed and prime institution of electronic media like Aaj Tak.”

The BCD, thus, demanded the channel to immediately stop the telecast of the said promo. It has also sought a public apology from Aaj Tak, failing which it would take civil and criminal action against the organization and the persons concerned.

Also, the BCD has asked the channel to deliver all the edited and original footage of the said promo and disclose the details of the other platforms where this program has been telecast till date.
