New Delhi: With the hearing going on in the SC on Aadhaar case ,the court seems more and more concerned about the safety of the data stored. The SC  bench comprising of CJI Dipak Misra and Justices  K Sikri, A M Khanwilkar, D Y Chandrachud and Ashok Bhushan said the data is a virtual goldmine and if it were to fall in wrong hands, there was a huge risk of this being misused. The judges even cited the example of  Cambridge Analytica’s illegal mining of data of Facebook users.

The court asked the centre to provide details of the steps it proposes to take to prevent misuse of data stored with UIDAI centres. Senior advocate Rakesh Dwivedi ,who  appeared for UIDAI and Gujarat  government told the court that biometrics were not shared with anyone and even the verifying process for requesting entities was encrypted. He said sharing Biometrics is a punishable offence.

But the bench did not seem convinced with the submission and said there is still possibility of misuse. The senior counsel stated in the court that Aadhaar act prohibited sharing of data as well as barred UIDAI from acquiring any technology that can analyse the stored data. If the court feels there is any provision in the law which compromises the data, it can strike it down.

Justices Sikri and Chandrachud raised the issue that in today's world it is the data which matters and even if India has high number of poor people, their data can still be of great value.
