The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, Government of India, on October 14, has approved the appointment of Mr. A.K. Mendiratta, presently posted as District & Sessions Judge, North-East District, Karkarduma Courts, Delhi to the post of Law Secretary, Department of Legal Affairs, Government of India.

The appointment has been approved on a contractual basis up to March 30, 2023 i.e., till his attaining the age of 60 years or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

This is reported to be the first instance when a sitting District & Sessions Judge has been appointed as the Law Secretary for Union Government.

The post of Union Law Secretary was lying vacant since December 2018. The Secretary of Department of Justice was handling the additional charge of Union Law Secretary. The advertisement for filing of vacancy was put out in April this year which clearly mentioned that sitting or retired district judges could apply for the post.

Anoop Kumar Mendiratta was serving as the Principal Secretary (Law) for the Delhi Government before being appointed as the Principal Judge of Family Courts at Saket District Courts. From Principal Judge, Family Courts, Mendiratta was appointed as District & Sessions Judge of North-East District.

As the Union Law Secretary, Mendiratta would be tasked with rendering advice to the Attorney General, the Solicitor General of India and other Central Government Law officers. He will also be responsible to oversee cases on behalf of the Central Government in Supreme Court and High Courts and engage counsels who would appear for the Union of India.
